Austrian companies embrace China’s winter sports sector

According to the ambitious plan released by the General Admi

nistration of Sport of China in 2016 to construct winter sports infrastructure and popularize winter spor

ts, at least 650 skating rinks and 800 ski resorts are expected to be build nationwide by 2022.

By 2025, about 300 million people in the country are expected to participate in winter

sports, increasing the market value of the winter sports sector to 1 trillion yuan.

Driven by multiple momentums, China has witnessed rapid growth in the winter sports ind

ustry in recent years, such as venue facilities, training, tourism and equipment sectors, said Peng Weiyong, dep

uty director general of Finance Department at the General Administration of Sports.

Winter sports has become a booster for China’s sports industry and even economic development, Peng added.

By the end of June 2018, the total number of ski resorts in China rose to 738, an increase of 70 or 10.5 percent over

the same period in 2017. The number of indoor ice rinks totaled 334, an increase of 75 or 29 percent year-on-yea

r increase. In 2018, 19.7 million people participated in skiing, up 12.6 percent year-on-year.

China aims to build world-class metropolitan areas by 2035

China aims to build several metropolitan areas with global influence by 2035, according to the country’s top economic planner.

Notable progress should be made by 2022 with improvement in infrastructure in

tegration, freer markets, more coordinated industries and more livable envi

ronments, according to the guidelines released by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

Metropolitan areas are regions in city clusters which circle around a big

city and are within an hour commute. China plans to build 19 city clusters by 2020.

Support will be given to develop sectors like industrial design, cultural and creativ

e products, and financial services to establish an industrial mix with modern services as the main pillar.

Developing metropolitan areas will help optimize demographics and economic structures and stimu

late effective investment and potential consumption demands, lending steam to economic expansion, the NDRC said.

HK, Macao legal workers to be arbitrators in Guangzhou

Legal professionals from Hong Kong and Macao will be allowed to work as arbitrators in Nansha district of Guangz

hou as part of an effort by Guangdong province to strengthen cooperation with the two special administrative regions.

Nansha lies within the Guangdong Pilot Free Trade Zone.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security has approved the introduction of the legal professionals, who

will work at the Court of Arbitration for Labor and Personnel Disputes to settle competing claims.

Sources at the court said the Hong Kong-and Macao-based arbitrators will be signific

ant in promoting the business environment of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

“It will help provide high-quality, efficient and fast legal services for busine

sses, especially those whose investors include companies from Hong Kong and Macao,” the court said on Tuesday.

According to the development plan outline for the Greater Bay Area, which was unveiled on Mond

ay, Nansha district will develop into a pilot zone for closer overall cooperation in exchanges of h

uman resources, goods, materials, funds and information between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.

The court said the first group of labor arbitrators from Hong Kong and Macao will be appointed in late 2019.

Meanwhile in California, a state senator introduced a bil

would force priests to report suspected child abuse, even if that meant violating the seal of the Sacrament of Penance, wid

ely known as Confession. Under current church law, priests who violate the secrecy of the sacrament can face excommunication.

”Individuals who harm children or are suspected of harming children must be reported

so a timely investigation by law enforcement can occur,” said State Senator Jerry Hill, a Democrat from San Mateo.

”The law should apply equally to all professionals who have been designated as mandated reporters of these crimes — with

no exceptions, period. The exemption for clergy only protects the abuser and places children at further risk.”

Pope’s bid to tackle abuse scandal

The actions by US prosecutors and legislators came as nearly 200 Catholic leaders f

rom around the world descended upon the Vatican to address the clergy sexual abuse crisis.

The four-day summit, convened by Pope Francis last September, has included a spee

ch by the Pope, talks outlining best practices and small-group discussions among bishops.

The statement made no reference to Britain’s decision to

leave the European Union, and Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo said in Tokyo that the decision was not rel

ated to Brexit.
But uncertainty concerning Britain’s future trading relationship with its bigg

est export market is one of the big clouds hanging over the car industry.
Brexit backdrop

Christian Stadler, an autos expert and professor of strategic management at Warw

ick Business School, said that Brexit “must have been a factor” in Honda’s decision.

“Companies from Japan and other countries were attracted to Britain because it gave them easier entry to the luc

rative European market, through an English speaking country. At the moment, there is no deal in place to co

ntinue that after Brexit,” he said.
“The United Kingdom will not be able to strike better trade deals than it currently has

before it leaves the European Union, so it starts to look like a less attractive place to build cars,” said Stadler.

One particularly thoughtful touch is the hotel’s use of photographs. If a couple is celebrating an anniversary, for example

the staff will often track down a wedding photograph and place it bedside during turndown service.

For a wedding held on site recently, the staff even went so far as to print a photo from the wedding that took place earlier th

at day, to have it ready to display in the couple’s bridal suite after the evening’s festivities.

For another guest with Irish heritage who was hoping to reconnect with his roots, a staffer wa

”He drove [the guest] out to the club where his cousin used to play hurling back, I don’t know, a h

The Emerald Isle’s cuisine may be most famed for creative uses of potatoes, but contemporary Irish food encompasses far

more than spuds; highlighting the country’s excellent produce and meat is one of the hotel’s main culinary goals.

During Adare’s renovation, culinary director Loughlin Druhan loaded his team into a cam

The secret: How they keep the golf greens, well, so greeneq

At 845 acres, Adare’s property requires a significant amount of upkeep. And no area receives more loving care than the hotel’s

golf course, an idyllic stretch of emerald greens winding around the River Maigue.

”There are over 50 employees just on grass and greenery,” says Heery. And while Ireland may be ra

re created with the intention of making Adare one of the top golf destinations in the world.

So far, so good. The course was crowned the World’s Best New Golf Course in 2018 by t

In short, thanks to changes in the internal and extern

al environment, China’s monetary policy is expected to sail out of the “reefs” in 2019, becoming more flexible in maintaining its prudent, neutral, and marginally loose stance.

We believe that comprehensive and targeted cuts to reserve req

uirement ratios, reductions in open market rates, and increased use of targeted medium-term l

ending facility will become the main policy tools of China’s central bank in 2019. Only when extreme changes happen in the internal and external env

ironment (for example, the Chinese economy fails to stabilize in the middle of 2019 and the Fed doesn’t raise interest rates),

will the possibility of lowering the benchmark deposit and lending interest rates rise significantly.
hina will take measures to help domestic soybe

an and corn farmers, while also seeking to expand imports of certain agricultural products that are considered in s

hortage through diversified channels, according to a central government guideline released on Tuesday.

The plan, came before a new round of trade negotiations between Chinese and US officials set fo

r Thursday and Friday, shows Chinese policymakers’ determination to be le

ss dependent on US agricultural imports such as soybeans even if a deal is likely to be reached, industry analysts said.

bundant mallow harvest a boon for impoverished Iraqis

With rain spreading across Iraq, mallow growing in the northern and eastern parts of the country gives impoverished people food to eat or sell for extra money.

Mallow, or Malva pusilla, is a cosmopolitan weed found principally in temperate regions of the w

orld. It is a fast-growing annual or perennial herb with the capacity to grow in dense patc

hes in gardens, yards, roadsides, waste ground, orchards, pastures and agricultural fields.

It grows without any assistance and easily harvested and so is often called the “food of the poor.”

It is also delicious and good for one’s health.

Thanks to the heavy rain in Iraq, this year mallow spread and were found for collectors to harvest in winter, without any help from farmers.

Some of poor families are able to collect mallow plants and sell them due to its medical value, as it is used to treat some sicknesses and to strengthen immunity.

Fan Gang, director of China’s National Economic Research

Institute and vice president of the China Society of Economic Reform

Structural reform on the supply side and the macro adjustment to the demand-side can be done at the same time.

While we must push forward with reforms continuously, whenever there are econom

ic fluctuations, it is still necessary to take some macro-control measures.

That’s what developed countries and market-economy countries have done to stabilize their economies over the years.

We can’t hold back some necessary adjustment me

asures on the demand side just because supply-side reform fails to see results. We need action on both sides.

When we discuss reforms, don’t forget that if the reform isn’t rolled out amid a stable develop

ment environment and the economy doesn’t move at a stable growth level, it will be hard to advance many reforms.
